Learning about forests!
L.E.A.F. Workshop

Ms Mc Grath's 2nd class participated in the L.E.A.F. workshop with Ray Foley (L.E.A.F. co-ordinator, An Taisce) on Friday February 8th. The girls had a very active day learning all about:

  • native/non-native species of trees,birds & animals of Ireland
  • seed dispersal
  • the importance of trees
  • the ecological web
  • planting acorns
  • investigating our own school garden

They started the day by brainstorming all of the Irish trees that they knew. Ray was surprised by the girls' knowledge of Irish trees ! The girls discovered all about the origins of trees in Ireland and about our native trees, birds and animals.

They also learned about the importance of our trees and forests to us all.The girls found out about how trees contribute to our environment by improving our air quality, providing natural and wild areas for recreation, how trees provide homes for ecosystems and they found out about products and foods that come from trees. They also learnt how Trees and forests greatly contribute to our wellbeing.

The girls planted acorns and discussed how they would mind and care for them as they watch them grow into mighty oaks ! They then investigated the trees, habitats and compost heaps in our school garden. The girls really enjoyed the day and will continue group work on the native trees of Ireland before their field trip to Curraghchase Forest,Co.Limerick in May!
