Making Parachutes!

The girls in Ms Mc Grath's 2nd class learnt all about energy & forces and materials with their very interesting lesson on parachutes with Ms Waide ,one of their student teachers. They started this amazing lesson by looking at pictures of parachutes and discussing the shapes and sizes of parachutes. They discussed gravity and how parachutes are affected by air resistance.

They discovered that when you release a real parachute the weight pulls down on the strings and opens up a large surface area of material that uses air resistance to slow it down. The girls learnt that the larger the surface area of the parachute, the more air resistance and the slower the parachute will drop.

The girls experienced making a simple parachute .They pieced together pieces of light materials such as kitchen roll, parchment paper or tinfoil to four strings and a wooden clothes peg to weigh down the parachute. All the girls learnt so much from this experience and also took note of what materials they thought would work best in parachutes for their investigation and which took longer to fall to the floor. Well done Ms Waide on a most uplifting lesson!
